Where: In Edinburgh’s old town area. See map.
Why you should visit: This is craft beer at its best. Creative beer styles, names, labels – everything about their beer bars and brewmaking shows that they’ve put serious thought behind their brand. They’ve only existed for a little over 5 years now but you can just tell they’re going to continue growing. Quote from the owners on their website (see link above) – “Martin and I (James) were bored of the industrially brewed lagers and stuffy ales that dominated the UK market. We decided the best way to fix this undesirable predicament was to brew our own beers.”
Overall Comments: We had never heard of BrewDog before we stumbled upon this bar on a walk around Edinburgh. From the minute we walked in we were completely impressed. The entire interior look is fresh and creative. The brick bar completes it! The beer names are fun and original – names like 5a.m. Saint, Dogma, and Punk IPA. With beer names like that, the beer quality better back it up. And it does. The flavors are all unique and powerful, and the alcohol content is also generally a lot higher than the alcohol content of traditional beers throughout other parts of the UK. The other great part was that there were loads of books and board games for customers to use at their convenience. My husband and I grabbed a beer guide book to browse through and played a game of Scrabble while we enjoyed our beer. Visited in May 2012
