Narrow Boats…

December 7, 2012

Everyday London Life, London Life

The Narrow Boat or Canal Boat was “made to fit the narrow canals of Great Britain…and refers to the original working boats built in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries for carrying goods on the narrow canals” (Wikipedia)

The canals throughout London are beautiful, and my husband Jim and I have spent many weekend afternoons cycling or walking along the canals. Jim is determined to rent a canal boat for a weekend, and although many people throughout England do now live in their boats, I’d prefer to look at them traveling past me instead of being inside one for the weekend!!

I may need to try it once, though, just for the experience.  There was one day this past September when the weather was exceptionally nice – in London that means not raining and a slight visibility of sun which they call “sunny spells” here.  We cycled through Victoria park in East London. Ordered a coffee from the woman in her canal houseboat and stopped to relax before continuing on our cycle journey.

This is something I definitely can’t do in the US!
