Fruh Am Dom – By far our favorite brewery in Cologne.
Where: The old town of Cologne. Very easy to walk to if you’re staying in the touristy part of the city. See map.
Why you should visit: “Kölsch is the only beer that may not be brewed outside the Cologne region, as determined by the Kölsch Convention of 1986. There is a grandfather clause for a few breweries in the larger area that were already established as of 1986.” (Wikipedia)
Overall Comments: There’s some small cocktail tables and a few bar stool seats near to the area where they pour the beer. You should try to stand or sit near there if possible instead of in the restaurant. It’s amazing to see how quickly, and expertly, they fill each .2 liter glass and also very interesting to see how the keg is changed…I won’t give anything else away. Visited in April 2012
If you’ve never been to Cologne, you’ll notice that most of the breweries will continue serving you beer before you ask for another glass. The only way to stop them from doing this is to place your coaster on top of your glass, signaling that you’re finished.
