Cars will run you over…

Everyday London Life, London Life

When you think of London, you might think of that amazing English accent and proper behavior.  Don’t let that throw you off when you’re a pedestrian walking on the London roads.

If you are visiting London from the U.S., you have one main thing to get used to, which is to see the cars driving on the left-hand side of the road.

But there’s actually a more important thing to be aware of when you arrive.

I’m not sure all of the legal rules behind this, but the standard when you’re crossing the street is that the car has the right of way. Please be careful, as cars, motorcycles, bicycles, and even double decker buses will run you over or at the very least speed up if they see you trying to cross first…

There are a few crossings painted in all white lines with a blinking lamp post in which pedestrians have the right of way.  I now take extra time walking across the street in those situations. For some reason it makes me feel powerful when I get the opportunity to cross the street without being worried that I’ll be plowed over!

One great positive – There are obvious signs everywhere to remind you to “look left” or “look right” painted on all the major road crossings.
