As each day passes, Jim and I feel more and more fortunate to have picked the Southwark area as our home base in London. Our recent excitement is due to the opening of Brew By Numbers – where a full fledged 10bbl brewery operation is going to be up and running very soon.
Where: 79 Enid Street, Bermondsey, London. See map.
Why you should visit: On their website (currently a work in progress), they describe their beers as “exciting and forward thinking with a focus on quality and drinkability.” Based on the beer I’ve sampled so far, I believe that they are working hard to stick to this motto.
Overall comments: My first taste of the beer was earlier this year at Craft Beer Co in London, where I met up with other beer fans, Chris and Merideth (Beer Geek blog). At that point in time I learned from my friends that the Brew By Numbers “brewery” was based in a flat along Southwark Bridge road.
Two days ago, Jim and I visited their new location, a large storage facility underneath the rail tracks.
Jim had the Saison with flavors of lemon and saphir and I had the Stout. For such a young operation, they seem to be taking a lot of risks with their beer recipes and additionally putting out a great deal of beer varieties, which is awesome! The numbers on the labels are a good example of the amount of beer recipes they’re producing (the first two numbers represent the “style” of beer and the second two numbers represent the “recipe” number). As you can see below they’ve already produced at least 5 saison varieties in the short time they’ve been open.
One of the highlights on Saturday was having the opportunity to speak to Tom (one of the two founding brewers) about the brewery. It’s always great to hear the enthusiasm directly from the owner of the business – makes me more excited about the beer, too.
They are currently open from 11am – 6pm on Saturdays, and only selling a limited supply of beers from the fridge in the brewery until their 10bbl set-up is operational.
But I expect we’ll be seeing their beer at all of the best craft beer bars soon, and in the meantime I can guarantee Jim and I will be regular customers during the remainder of the time we live in London!
